Providing Tools & Techniques in Enhancing A Growth Mindset

FAQs

DO I NEED THERAPY?
How do we know when to ask for help? Everyone experiences times of challenge—difficult situations at home or work, life events, relationship problems, feeling “down” or anxious. Sometimes it’s hard to ask for support and I am aware that most people do not choose counseling first. In fact, most people try to take care of these feelings on their own, or turn to friends or family. However, there are times it doesn’t feel right to talk about everything with family and friends. Sometimes it can feel like you have tried everything, and things still aren’t getting better. Sometimes it’s hard to even understand why you feel the way you do and having a professional to help guide you during a difficult time can be very positive.  Deciding to seek help is a sign of courage and strength, not weakness!

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
The duration of therapy is impossible to predict. Sometimes things change very quickly. Sometimes it change takes a longer time. After the first session, it is typical to make a plan to clarify your goals in therapy and determine how often to meet, and how frequent to meet.  At regular intervals, I like to review with you what is best in terms of goals and how often to meet.

HOW DO I PICK A THERAPIST?
I believe very strongly that the fit between you and your therapist is the most important variable determining the effectiveness of therapy. Research supports the need for this relationship as part of good outcomes. Within 3-4 sessions, you should feel comfortable, listened to, and challenged and supported. I encourage people to reflect about this relationship, especially since we “shop around” for so many other things in our lives!

IS WHAT I SHARE WITH MY THERAPIST CONFIDENTIAL?
Yes! I abide by the health privacy rules as established by our state and federal government and professional organizations. If you and I determine that I should talk with someone on your behalf I will have you sign a form giving me permission to do this.

HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?
I manage my own schedule work with you to set an appointment. If you leave a message with your name and number I will get back to you shortly.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER THERAPY?
We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem and Quartz. If you are using insurance, it usually takes 3-6 weeks for payments to begin to process. I suggest you pay co-pays and deductibles as you go, to prevent building up a large bill. I have a billing company, Valley Medical Billing, that will be happy to answer your questions about insurance or co-pays. I highly recommend you also call to verify we are given the same information.  If you prefer not to use insurance to avoid diagnosis, or to preserve complete confidentiality, we make the process as easy and manageable as possible. Payment is expected at each session.

CAN I CHANGE APPOINTMENTS?
We require a minimum of 24 hours (one full business day) notice for cancellations. Sessions missed or cancelled less than 24 hours in advance will be billed directly to you.

WHAT ABOUT MEDICATION?
Medication for depression and/or anxiety can be an extremely helpful component of care but I am not a prescriber. I can work closely with a number of medical practitioners, and can assist you in finding one, if you choose to explore the medication possibilities.

WHERE DO I PARK WHEN I COME FOR AN APPOINTMENT?
There is plenty of parking in our parking lot at 3330 University Avenue. It’s free.
